Born to a Burgher family as Jean Solomons in the hill town of Kandy in Sri Lanka, Jean Arasanayagam is recognized as one of Sri Lanka’s foremost contemporary English literary voices. She is among a select few resident Sri Lankan English writers to be published internationally and her work has been central to sustaining the vibrant Anglophone writing tradition in the country. Arasanayagam received her schooling in Kandy and graduated from the University of Peradeniya. Having worked as an English educator in various tertiary and secondary educational institutions, she began publishing her work in the early 1970s.
