In 1983, Bill Buford, editor of Granta, devoted its seventh issue to present a record of some of the most promising young British novelists, among whom were authors that are now solidly consolidated in the British letters: Julian Barnes, Ian McEwan, Martin Amis, Kazuo Ishiguro, Graham Swift, Rose Tremain, Caryl Phillips and William Boyd himself.
