Miguel de Unamuno is one of the most prolific Spanish authors and, it could be argued, the greatest of the twentieth century. His novels, poetry, theatre, philosophical treatises and political essays boast an aesthetic and intellectual quality hardly surpassed by any other Spanish author of his generation. He is today regarded as the second Spanish philosopher of his century, the best Spanish Modernist poet, the most influential political essayist of the pre-war decades, the author of landmark novels, and the first Spanish author who deserves to be labelled an intellectual.
