Shyam Selvadurai was born in 1965 in Sri Lanka and left the country at the age of 19 for Toronto, Canada. His first novel Funny Boy was published in 1994 and his second novel, Cinnamon Gardens was published by Penguin in 1998.

Funny Boy won the WH Smith/Books in Canada Novel Award and in the US the Lambda Literary award for Best Gay Men's Fiction. It was also named as a notable book by the American Literary Association. It was published in the US, UK, India and numerous countries in Europe.
