Edmond Eugène Joseph Alexis Rostand was born in Marseilles on 1 April 1868. Besides his famous heroic verse drama, Cyrano de Bergerac (1897), he wrote other verse plays successful in their time, such as L’Aiglon (The Eaglet, 1900) and Chantecler (1910). He also published four volumes of verse. The success of Cyrano de Bergerac brought Rostand worldwide fame. He died in 1918 from the Spanish flu.
