At the Sydney Writers’ Festival in May 2014, Thomas Keneally was acclaimed for the 50th anniversary of the publication of his first novel, The Place at Whitton, a murder mystery set in a monastery which was published in Britain and Australia in 1954 by Cassell, and by Walker & Co in New York in the following year. From the beginning of his career, Keneally was keen to exploit international opportunities for publication. As David Carter has remarked, “Many Australian authors have had American editions, but Keneally is among the few to have had an American career” (391).
