Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was sworn on 12 January 1972 as the first Prime Minister of Bangladesh; he also became President of the country on 25 January 1975. Mujib is the pivotal figure in the birth of Bangladesh, being known in the country as “Jatir Janak” [“Father of the Nation”] and “Bangabandhu” [“Friend of Bengal”]. In his youth, he worked whole-heartedly so that Muslims could get a country of their own. But almost immediately after the Pakistan he strove for was created in 1947, he became convinced that the people of East Bengal, now East Pakistanis, needed more autonomy.
