Gabrielle de Coignard (c.1550-1586) was a French devotional poet writing in Toulouse at the end of the sixteenth century. From what little is known about her early life, Coignard was likely born into a parliamentary family in Toulouse around 1550, making her part of the social and political elite and exposing her to a variety of spiritual and artistic traditions engrained into the fabric of the Catholic city. Coignard would have likely possessed knowledge of the poetic games, or Jeux Floraux, held annually in Toulouse, due to her father’s role as a maître, or judge.
