Rebecca Brown is a Seattle-based lesbian author who is especially known for being a “writer’s writer”. She has been working in the shadows for the past thirty years to compose a challenging and highly rewarding oeuvre, for which the New York author Dale Peck has dubbed her “the greatest secret of American letters”. Yet Brown’s widely translated novel The Gifts of the Body (1994), perhaps not coincidentally her least “lesbian” book, is popular with the general reading audience and has been a bestseller in Japan. The novel, which relates the heavily autobiographical and emotionally powerful experiences of a homecare worker assisting people with AIDS in the dying process, won the 1995 Lambda Literary Award.
