Romain Rolland (1866-1944) was a French author, dramatist and essayist whose interests covered a wide range of areas including history, musicology, biography, pacifism, politics, and Eastern philosophy. His thoughts on this breadth of sympathies are recorded with perspicacity in his novels, essays, biographies, plays and prolific correspondence. It was his epic novel, Jean-Christophe,that established his reputation in the literary world; the novel is now translated into more than twenty languages, attesting to its universal and lasting appeal.
