Mohsin Hamid was born on 23 July 1971, in Lahore, Pakistan, and spent much of his early childhood in the United States while his father was doing his PhD at Stanford University. The family moved back to Lahore in 1980 and Hamid was educated at the Lahore American School. Later returning to the USA to continue higher education, Hamid graduated from Princeton University, where his creative writing teachers included Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Morrison. He joined Harvard Law School and, after graduating from there, he spent several years working as a management consultant in New York, moved to London in 2001, then back to Pakistan in 2009.
