Julien Green’s Journal is now the longest diary in the history of French literature. The first twelve volumes were published by Gallimard in volumes 4, 5 and 6 of the edition of his complete works in the “Bibliothèque de la Pléiade” collection between 1975 and 1990. The subsequent seven volumes were published by Les Editions du Seuil and Fayard between 1990 and 2001. To these must be added four further volumes, Dans la gueule du temps [In the Mouth of Time], 1972- 1976, an illustrated commentary on contemporary events published in 1978, and two travel volumes, Villes 1920-1984, published in 1985, and Journal du voyageur [Traveller’s Diary], published in 1990. …
