Mugby Junction appeared in the Christmas edition of Charles Dickens’ journal All the Year Round in 1866. Dickens had published Christmas editions since the magazine’s first year, with each issue containing a selection of short stories by various authors collected under a set theme. For instance, the first, for Christmas 1859, featured The Haunted House, a selection of ghost stories set in different rooms of a house, whilst the 1862 edition Somebody’s Luggage imagined stories surrounding a mysterious traveller’s possessions.
