Estrella distante (Distant Star) marks a decisive step in Bolaño’s development as a mature novelist. Published in 1996, immediately after La literatura nazi en América (Nazi Literature in the Americas, 1996), it constitutes a rewriting, expansion and transformation of the final section of that novel (titled “El infame Ramírez Hoffman”). Estrella distante incorporates and cites La literatura nazi –we learn, for example, that the protagonist’s best friend has authored a book on the history of neofascist literary movements in the Southern Cone, a clear reference to La literatura nazi. At the same time, however, Estrella distante also takes the former novel to a higher level. …
