Born in 1950 in Kenya, Moyez G. Vassanji is of South Asian ancestry. He moved to the United States for university in the late 1960s, and settled in Toronto in 1978. He is the author of a body of fiction and non-fiction that primarily focuses on the history of migration of the East African Asian Diaspora which has been uprooted twice – first from India to East Africa, and then from East Africa to Canada. Vassanji is the recipient of several prestigious literary awards including the Regional Commonwealth Prize, the Governor General’s Award, the Giller Prize (twice), and the Canada Council for the Arts Molson Prize.
