Though surprisingly little is known about Eliza Haywood’s (1693?-1756) biography, she was one of the most prolific authors of the early- to mid- eighteenth century, producing an astonishing total of around 70 works in a variety of genres. In addition to her nearly 50 works of amatory and similar prose fictions, she also wrote plays, essays, translations and other works that defy easy categorization (Spedding 2004). Much of her fictional work is characterized by its exploration of the material and epistemological effects of love and desire, and she was lauded during her lifetime for this skill.
