Published in 1928, Aufstand der Fischer von St. Barbara [Revolt of the Fishermen of St. Barbara] is Anna Seghers' first longer narrative. The text was awarded the prestigious Kleist prize of that year. On the surface, Aufstand relates the tale of a fishing community's failed attempt to secure better wages. The narrative revolves mainly around the main character and instigator Hull as he seeks to unite St. Barbara and the surrounding communities, but it specifically illustrates the relationships between the fishermen, their wives, and each other.
