In their marketing of Ann-Marie MacDonald’s first novel, Fall on Your Knees, Knopf Canada sought to create a media spectacle, playing up what was, even then, MacDonald’s status as a Canadian literary celebrity. As Danielle Fuller points out, the book was launched as part of Knopf’s “The New Face of Fiction” campaign, which used photographs of the author as a way to sell books (45), and was heavily marketed in both Canada and international venues. The culmination of this spectacle was the selection of Fall on Your Knees for Oprah’s Book Club, which “increased the novel’s sales by between 600,000 and one million copies” (Fuller 52).
