Gonzalo Pizarro (half-brother of the more eminent Francisco Pizarro) led a rebellion of conquistadors in Peru against the imposition by Viceroy Nunez of the 'New Laws' which granted some protection to the indigenous peoples. At the battle of Xaquixaguana, an army under the control of Pedro de la Gasca, who had been sent as an envoy from Spain to pacify the colony, defeats Gonzalo Pizarro, and ends the separatist movement.
