Evgenii Popov is a writer of satirical, occasionally rumbustious prose works, most of which are rooted in his own experience. His forbidden works of the 1970s and 1980s showed the seamy and violent side of Soviet provincial life, far from the centres of cultural or political power, revealing the nakedness of a society shorn of its ideological clothing. In his post-Soviet writings, he continues to lambast authority for its neglect of the Russian people and their pauperisation in the 1990s, but he also attacks the injustices of Russian history, geography and even anthropology.
