Poet, playwright, rapper, performer, actor and director Liz Lochhead has re-defined what it is to be a Scottish woman in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Applauded by feminists for her rich and complex female characters in her poetry and drama and generally admired for her ironic wit and subversive strategies, Lochhead’s themes are largely concerned with identities: cultural identity, female identity and childhood identity in a world fraught with violence, contradictions and confusions. Her bold and sometimes acerbic sense of humour offers challenges to regional and patriarchal prejudices and her use of language is at once funny and highly sensitive to the patterns and rhythms of everyday life.
