Sarah Trimmer was a writer whose work helped to shape the genre of children’s literature and a philanthropist dedicated to increasing and improving education for the poor. She wrote stories, bibles, and text books for children, as well as educational tracts and two magazines for adults. Much of her writing was intended for the Sunday and Charity schools she established and managed.

Trimmer was born on 6 January 1741 in Ipswich, the only daughter of Sarah and Joshua Kirby. When she was 14 the family moved to London where her father served as a tutor to the Prince of Wales (later King George III) teaching him and later the Queen “Perspectives”.
