Florence Marryat, also known by her married names, Mrs. Ross Church and Mrs. Francis Lean, was a popular English sensation novelist, writer, editor, and prominent Spiritualist active during the mid-to-late Victorian era. Besides penning multiple works in other genres, Marryat wrote at least sixty-six novels between 1865 and 1899. Recently, her 1897 vampire novel The Blood of the Vampire, which depicts the interracial heiress Harriet Brandt as inadvertently draining Europeans with lethal psychic energy, has received scholarly attention and provoked debate regarding its meaning.
