Hardly any other medieval poet has ever identified him/herself more fittingly than Der Stricker [the article uses here the masculine pronoun to refer to the poet in order to make for smoother reading, although she could equally well have been female; the gender is unknown]. This name is a nom de plume, a literary term, referring to the act of knitting, or stringing ropes. Every text, both then and today, constitutes a narrative fabric, a textile, so to speak, whether we talk about poetry or prose.
