Considered by many critics one of Spain’s greatest novelists of the twentieth century, Gonzalo Torrente Ballester is also probably one of the least known Spanish writer outside of the Iberian Peninsula and the last to receive well-deserved acclaim by his countrymen and literary critics. Novelist, dramatist, literary critic himself, history professor, pamphleteer, literary professor, Torrente Ballester’s career spanned from the late 1930s through the end of the twentieth century.
