Since her first novel, Un Papillon dans la cité, was published in 1992, Gisèle Pineau has rapidly become one of the most popular and celebrated contemporary authors from the French Antilles. Pineau was born in Paris, on 18 May 1956, to Guadeloupean parents. Her personal history is one of mobility and migration: as a consequence of her father’s military career, the family moved a number of times during her childhood and adolescence, settling temporarily in the Congo, Martinique, and Guadeloupe, before returning to metropolitan France.
