Elizabeth Egerton, neé Cavendish, Countess of Bridgewater (1626-1683) was a noblewoman, manuscript poet, playwright, and writer of religious meditations. She was the second of three daughters of William Cavendish, first Duke Newcastle upon Tyne (1593-1676), and Elizabeth Howard, neé Basset (1599-1643). Bess of Hardwick (1527-1608) was her great grandmother, and, after her father’s remarriage in 1745, she became stepdaughter to Margaret Cavendish, neé Lucas, Duchess of Newcastle (1623-1673). Elizabeth was styled Lady Elizabeth Cavendish until her marriage in 1641 to John Egerton, Viscount Brackley (1623-1686), later the second Earl of Bridgewater.
