Author of what is considered to be the first Brazilian novel, O Filho do Pescador [The Fisherman’s Son], of 1843, Antônio Gonçalves Teixeira e Sousa was a Romantic novelist, poet and playwright, whose literary achievements, in the view of most twentieth-century literary critics, have little value beyond the historic (note 1). Recent studies, however, have demonstrated a shift towards greater appreciation of this author’s involvement in the development of the Brazilian literary scene during the first half of the nineteenth century.
