When the Guatemalan political activist Rigoberta Menchú was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 “in recognition of her work for social justice and ethno-cultural reconciliation based on respect for the rights of indigenous peoples” (The Nobel Peace Prize 1992) she was already well known internationally as the author of Me llamo Rigoberta Menchú y así me nació la conciencia [I, Rigoberta Menchú: An Indian Woman in Guatemala], first published in Spanish in 1983 and translated into English in 1994.
