Born in Kiev in 1887 into an ethnically Polish family, Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky studied law and philology at the University of Kiev. His father was a retired officer, later an accountant. The family was reasonably well-off, and as a young man Krzhizhanovsky enjoyed several European holidays, visiting France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. After graduating in 1913, Krzhizhanovsky worked briefly as a barrister’s assistant before embarking on his literary career.
