Ján Kollár (who spelled his name “Jan Kollár”), the Romantic poet and Pan-Slav idealist, was one of the most important Slavic authors of the early nineteenth century. He was born to a Lutheran family in Mošovce, a small town now in central Slovakia, but then in the northern counties of the Kingdom of Hungary, itself part of the Habsburg monarchy. His father paid for his primary schooling in Kremnica, but did not want him to pursue any further education. Kollár, however, had developed a passion for Latin poetry, hiding copies of classical works in his hat to read during church services.
