The Eastern German author Kerstin Hensel was born on May 29, 1961 in Karl-Marx-Stadt, which was changed back to its original city name, Chemnitz, after unification in 1990. After completing her studies in nursing at the Karl-Marx-Stadt medical school, she worked from 1980-83 as a surgical nurse. In 1983 she had a son (Benjamin), and began studying creative writing at the Johannes R. Becher Literaturinstitut in Leipzig. After graduation she assumed an internship at the Leipzig Theater. In 1987 she became a freelance writer, a privileged position in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), and began teaching Dramatic Verse and Diction at the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst “Ernst Busch” (Ernst Busch College of Dramatic Arts) in East …
