Composition and Publishing History
The Reivers: A Reminiscence was published on 4 June 1962, only a month before Faulkner’s death from a heart attack on 6 July 1962. His nineteenth and final novel, it was his fourteenth that centered around his apocryphal Yoknapatawpha County.
The book had been on Faulkner’s mind for at least twenty years before he began writing it. He had included a detailed summary, a “sort of Huck Finn”, in a letter to publisher Robert Haas in May 1940 (Faulkner, Selected Letters, 123), but it was not until August 1961 that he wrote to his editor, Albert Erskine, that he had finished a draft of a novel that “tells how Boon Hogganbeck …
