The Golden Bowl was published in 1904 in book form by Scribners in New York, without prior serialisation, and it was the last full-length novel that Henry James completed, although he continued to publish non-fiction and short stories until his death in 1916. It was republished in 1909 as volumes 23 and 24 of the New York Edition of James’s work (Scribners, 1907-1909). James made few changes to the text for this new edition, which is usually the version of the text reprinted. However, he did add a lengthy Preface looking back on his long literary career and on the process of revising his works for the New York Edition.
