The book was first published in USA in 1920 with the long title The Story of Doctor Dolittle, Being the History of His Peculiar Life at Home and Astonishing Adventures in Foreign Parts. Told by Hugh Lofting, illustrated by the author. The 1924 UK publication and subsequent editions everywhere mostly use the short title The Story of Doctor Dolittle, at least on the cover and half-title page, though frequently reproduce as an illustration Lofting’s hand-drawn title page with the long title. This novel is the first in a series which ultimately ran to fourteen novels plus a short story collection, with the last published in 1952.
