The impetus for the writing of Giants in the Earth came in 1923 when the writer Johan Bager announced his intention to write a novel about Norwegian immigration. Its publication would coincide with the centennial celebration of the first Norwegian immigration to America in 1825. Ole Rolvaag, who was himself a Norwegian immigrant and had worked his way from being a farm labor in South Dakota to a professorship at Saint Olaf’s College in Minnesota, felt that the right to such a novel was his. He had previously written five novels, but they were mainly known and read by Norwegian speaking Americans. He took a year’s sabbatical and started writing.
