Pushkin House [Pushkinskii dom] is the title of a major novel by contemporary Russian writer Andrei Bitov. Written from 1964-1971, the novel had a great deal of trouble being published in the Soviet Union before the Gorbachev era of greater freedom. Originally submitted for publication to the Soviet publishing house Soviet Writer [Sovetskii pisatel’], the novel ran into trouble. A few of its blander excerpts appeared in Soviet journals, but the novel was only published as a whole, in Russian, in the United States, by Ardis Publishers in 1978. The first publication of the novel in the Soviet Union was in the Russian journal Novyi mir, in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth issues of 1987, and in book form, with …
