Vozvrashchenie Chorba [The Return of Chorb] was written shortly after Nabokov [as “V. Sirin”] completed his first novel, Mashen´ka [Mary] and was published in two consecutive issues of the Berlin émigré journal Rul’ [Rudder] in 1925. It appeared again in 1930 (Berlin: Slovo) as the title story of a collection of fifteen stories, dating from 1924 onwards, which included: Bachmann, Groza [The Thunderstorm], Kartofel´nyi el´f [The Potato Elf], Passazhir [The Passenger], Pis´mo v Rossiiu [A Letter that Never Reached Russia], Podlets [An Affair of Honour], Putevoditel´ po Berlinu [A Guide to Berlin
