Emerging in the past decade as one of Canada’s most important and celebrated writers, Jane Urquhart has won national and international acclaim for her work. Urquhart was born in 1949 in Little Long Lac, Ontario, a small mining town, the second of three children. Her father, Walter Carter, was a prospector and mining engineer, and her mother, born Marion Quinn, a member of an extended Irish family. Urquhart acknowledges her debt as a writer to both the “prospecting stories [that] were 2/10s fact and 8/10s embellishment”, and the “oral traditions” of her mother’s family.
