John Herbert Newlove was born in 1938 in Regina, Saskatchewan. His parents (Thomas Harold, a lawyer, and Mary Constant Newlove, a teacher) separated when Newlove was young; his mother supported herself and her son by teaching in various communities across the Canadian prairies. His impressions of these communities, namely Veregin and Kamsack (both in Saskatchewan) would appear in his later writing. After Newlove completed high school, he studied for one year at the University of Saskatchewan before dropping out. He worked various jobs throughout the 1950s: a radio jockey, a high-school teacher, and a news editor for several radio stations. From 1960-67, Newlove lived in Vancouver, British Columbia.
