Borys Hrinchenko (1863-1910) is best known for Slovar ’ ukraїnskoї movy [Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language], which now bears his name. He was one of the most productive Ukrainian cultural figures during the final decades of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. He became a promoter of the national revival movement at a time when the Ukrainian language was banned in its print form by the Ems Decree of 1876. In the literary sphere, Hrinchenko proved himself primarily as an adept prose writer, the author of novels about the hard life of the Ukrainian peasantry as well as the emergence of a nationally conscious intelligentsia during the late nineteenth century.
