Louis Hamelin was born on June 9, 1959 in Proulxville, now a part of Shawinigan in the region of the Mauricie, Quebec, Canada. He has been regularly publishing novels, short-stories, and a few non-fiction books since 1989. Since 2003, he has also been contributing to one of Quebec’s national newspapers, Le Devoir, writing mainly about contemporary American literature, but also reporting on Quebec and First Nations literatures. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at McGill University in 1983, but the publication, in 1989, of his first novel La rage, earned him the Governor General’s Award for French-language fiction and changed his yet to be defined career path.
