Paola Masino was born in Pisa, Italy on May 20, 1908, to Enrico Alfredo Masino, a functionary at the Ministry of Agriculture, and Luisa Sforza of Montignoso, an aristocrat. Under the guidance of her beloved father, she read the Bible, Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, Perrault, and all the major nineteenth-century novelists (Flaubert, Stendhal, Dostoevskij, Dickens, and others). Masino did not finish high school, but her literary ambitions were apparent early on when, at the age of sixteen, she asked Luigi Pirandello to stage her play Le tre Marie.
