Rómulo Gallegos was born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1884. After abandoning Law studies at the Central University in Caracas, he co-founded the magazine La Alborada [Dawn Song] which published many of his essays. His first stories began to be published in Venezuelan periodicals in 1910 and continued to appear into the early 1920s.
