Vladimir Aleksandrovich Sollogub was born in St. Petersburg on 8 August 1813. His surname is the Russified form of the Polish name (still used by descendants of the family) “Sollohub”. The family was rich and very well connected, with estates in Lithuania, Belorussia and Russia. Sollogub's paternal grandfather Ivan Antonovich had thrown in his lot with the Russians at the first partition of Poland in 1775; his father Aleksandr Ivanovich (1788-1844) was a patron of the arts, especially of the theatre, and became “Grand Maître des Cérémonies” at the Imperial court.
