Iurii Andrukhovych was born in Stanislav, now Ivano-Frankivsk, in Western Ukraine in 1960. He began his career in the 1980s as a poet, publishing the collections Nebo i ploshcha (Sky and Square, 1985), Seredmistia (Downtown, 1989), Ekzotychni ptakhy i roslyny (Exotic birds and plants, 1991) and Bu-ba-bu (1995, together with Viktor Neborak and Oleksandr Irvanets). After some tentative steps into the world of prose in the 1980s with his Armiis'ki opovidannia (“Army stories”, published only in journals), in the early 1990s he turned to fiction and essay writing.
